What follows is simply a list of philosophy Ph.D. programs with strengths in philosophy of biology along with listings of the relevant faculty for each. The primary intended audience is prospective or current graduate students with interests in philosophy of biology who want to get the lay of the land by seeing who works where.

Standards & Practices for this Wiki

  1. The criteria for program inclusion is just that a philosophy or history and philosophy of science Ph.D. program[1] have at least one full-time faculty member who self-identifies as a philosopher of biology.
  2. The standard of evidence required to make the list is a faculty (or personal) web page of some kind—or a publicly-accessible CV—that lists philosophy of biology as a primary research interest.
  3. Philosophers who have made significant contributions to the philosophy of biology but who do not list phil bio as a current AOS/AOC are usually not listed.[2] However, sometimes philosophers' short web bios do not list philosophy of biology as an AOS, though their expanded bios or personal web pages do.[3] This wiki simply reflects the self-reports of online faculty listings so as to avoid having to make judgment calls about who counts as a philosopher of biology in borderline cases.
  4. Bioethics, environmental ethics, philosophy of neuroscience/cognitive science, and philosophy of medicine—in and of themselves—are not counted as philosophy of biology, though philosophers of biology with those interests are listed.
  5. This is a wiki, so anyone can contribute. If programs or faculty have been overlooked—which is assuredly the case—please feel free to make changes. Also, information will date quickly—especially links to pdf CVs since their filenames often contain the (approximate) date of creation—so by all means help fix links. Questions, comments, or ideas? Notes

  1. Free-standing Science & Technology Studies (or Science Studies) departments with strengths in philosophy of biology are not listed. The rationale for this is that since this wiki's intended audience is prospective philosophy/HPS Ph.D. students, the assumption is that they aren't targeting STS programs. The University of Exeter's Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Philosophy is a borderline case that is included because (1) its name contains the word 'philosophy' and (2) it has three faculty working in the philosophy of biology.
  2. Peter Machamer and James Woodward at the University of Pittsburgh Department of History and Philosophy of Science are two examples.
  3. John Beatty at the University of British Columbia is an example.
  4. Though he does not list philosophy of biology as a current AOS, Kitcher writes on his faculty profile page--accessed 2014-11-18--that he is willing to work with philosophy of biology graduate students.
